Who it is for

Water that is 3 to 4 months old

Dissolved solids build up in spa water until no amount of balancing holds. A regularly used hot tub needs fresh water every 3 to 4 months.

Cloudy, foamy, or smelly water

When the water will not clear, foams at the jets, or has a chemical or musty smell, the fix is a purge, drain, and clean, not more chemicals.

A spa that sat unused

Buying a house with a hot tub, or firing one back up after months idle, starts best with a full refresh so you know exactly what is in the water.

What happens on the visit

1
Purge the plumbing

When the spa needs it, we run a plumbing purge treatment before draining to loosen the biofilm that lives in the pipes and jets, so it leaves with the old water instead of seeding the new fill.

2
Drain and deep clean

We drain the tub completely, remove any remaining debris and water, clean the shell, jets, and waterline, and deep clean the filter cartridge.

3
Refill and start fresh

We refill from your available water supply, add fresh-fill startup chemicals, balance and sanitize the water, and run a basic operational check before we leave.

Why a hot tub needs a full water change

Every time you add sanitizer, pH adjuster, or shock to a hot tub, part of it stays behind as dissolved solids. Sweat, lotions, and detergents from swimsuits add more. Over a few months the total dissolved solids climb high enough that the water stops responding: sanitizer gets used up fast, the pH will not hold, and the water looks dull or cloudy no matter what you add. At that point the only fix is to drain it and start again.

For a regularly used residential hot tub, plan on a complete drain and refill about every 3 to 4 months. A heavily used spa or one with a lot of guests may need it sooner. If you are on recurring Spa Care with TrueBlue, we will tell you when the water is getting close.

What makes a Spa Refresh more than draining the tub

Draining alone leaves a surprising amount of old water and biofilm in the plumbing lines and jets. Refill on top of that and the new water starts contaminated. A Spa Refresh begins with a plumbing purge when the spa needs one, so the buildup in the lines is loosened and flushed out with the drain.

After the drain we clean the shell, the jets, and the waterline, where body oils and scale collect, and we deep clean the filter cartridge, which is where most of the gunk from the old water ended up. Then we refill, add the startup chemicals, balance the water, sanitize it, and check that the pump, jets, and heater are running. You get a hot tub that is genuinely clean, not just full of new water.

Recurring Spa Care customers may receive preferred Spa Refresh pricing. Pricing applies to standard residential hot tubs up to 500 gallons; swim spas hold several times the water and are quoted separately.

Drain & Refill questions

How often should I drain and refill my hot tub?

Plan on every 3 to 4 months for a regularly used residential hot tub. Heavy use, lots of guests, or trouble keeping the water balanced are signs it is time sooner.

How long does a hot tub drain and refill take?

Most Spa Refreshes take a few hours on site, depending on the size of the tub and how fast your water supply fills it. Heating the fresh water back up to temperature takes several more hours after we leave.

Do you need my water to fill the hot tub?

Yes. We refill from your available onsite water supply, usually a garden hose spigot. We do not truck in water.

Is a plumbing purge necessary?

Not on every refresh, but when a spa has not had one in a while, or the water has been foamy or smelly, purging the lines before draining removes the biofilm that would otherwise contaminate the fresh fill.

Are the startup chemicals included?

Yes. Fresh-fill startup chemicals, initial balancing, and sanitizing are included in the Spa Refresh price.

Can I swim in the spa the same day?

Once the water is refilled, balanced, and back up to temperature it is ready to use. We recommend checking that the sanitizer level is in range before the first soak.

Do you drain swim spas?

Yes, but swim spas hold several times the water of a standard hot tub, so they are quoted separately and typically cost more than the published rate.
